Former Black Stars head coach Avram Grant has been appointed by the Football Association of Zambia(FAZ) to replace Croatian trainer Aljosa Asanovic to lead the Chipolopolo.

The Association unveiled the 67-year-old during a press conference on Thursday morning, a day after his arrival in the country.

The former Chelsea manager will be tasked to lead the 2012 African champions to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Zambia have failed to impress since winning the trophy in 2012. They shocked Ghana in the semi-final before winning the final on penalties against Ivory Coast.

They were eliminated in the 2013 and 2015 editions in the first round and have since then failed to qualify for subsequent tournaments.

Avram Grant brings along experience in African football, as he once guided Ghana to win silver at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea. Under his tutelage, Ghana also reached the semi-final in the 2017 AFCON.

The Israeli gaffer was also the first to lead Chelsea to a Champions League final in 2008 when he took over from Jose Mourinho.

He last coached Indian side North East United in 2018 after leaving his post at the Black Stars.

Zambia lost to Ivory Coast in their first qualifier of the 2023 AFCON but bounced back with a win over Comoros in Lusaka.

Avram Grant will lead his side to go all out against Lesotho as they target their 18th AFCON appearance.
