Nico Williams makes Spain’s World Cup squad

Williams is set for his first tournament with Spain after being included in La Furia Roja’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Nico is likely to meet his elder brother Inaki Williams, who plays for Ghana in Qatar.

Inaki switched to Ghana in June, and the Ghana Football Association tried to get Nico as well, but Spain acted quickly, with coach Luis Enrique handing the young attacker his debut call-up in September.

Nico made two appearances in the September international window and assisted the winner as Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in Braga to advance to the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

Enrique was impressed with his performance and named him to the final World Cup squad, which begins on November 20.

Barcelona dominates Spain’s squad with seven players from the Catalan giants, including Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Gavi, and Ansu Fati.

Only Marcos Asensio and Dani Carvajal are from Real Madrid.

Thiago Alcantara and Sergio Ramos are the biggest names who have been left out of Spain’s squad.

“I am convinced that we are going to fight in the World Cup,” said Enrique. “I think there are players who deserve to be there, I’m the first to admit it. This is my and my staff’s selection.

“There is no doubt what you are going to see in the World Cup. We will try to control the game, dominate and create more than our opponents.

“I think our rivals will see Spain among the candidates to win the tournament.”

Spain play Costa Rica on November 23 in their first match, before facing Germany on November 27, in one of the biggest group-stage clashes, and take on Japan on December 1.
