Defender Najeeb Yakubu, who plays in Ukraine, says the situation in the Eastern European country is getting worse and has entreated the Ghana government to come to the rescue of Ghanaians.

The 21-year-old told 3Sports that everything, including football activities, had ground to a halt with people seeking refuge following Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Thursday.

Everyone is scared, but what can we do? There is nothing, “Yakubu said. From here, you don’t know where to go because the airport is not working, nothing is working, there is no bus, no taxis, banks are not working, restaurants, everything is shut down. It’s only the military in town and they allow people to buy [groceries] and go back home. ”

Yakubu has been playing in Ukraine since 2018 when he signed for top-light club Vorskla Poltava. Ukraine had been a peaceful country until Thursday morning, when Russian forces launched a major assault, firing missiles on cities and military installations.

“It’s happening close to me. There is one city [under attack] that is just one hour 30 minutes drive [from my place], so it’s very close to me now. The capital [Kyiv] is also under attack so where do you go from here? Nowhere.”

“The club is not working. Everyone is home. There is no training, nothing… You can train in your room but can’t go out like the way we used to. ”

“[Ghana government] should come and help us let us go home because we want to be home. We are here for work but it seems [the situation] is getting worse every time,” he added.

Everybody is scared… You can’t go anywhere. Nothing is working. I WANT TO COME HOME🇬🇭🥺”
